Greetings!
For the second year in a row, Pushing The Envelope is happy to be celebrating International Tuba Day (May 1) which occurs yearly on the first Friday of May. It was founded by a gentleman named Joel Day in 1979 while attending Lower Merion High School in suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Being one of only two tuba players in the school band and finding a lack of respect from his fellow classmates, he decided to set a day aside for our recognition as reputable musicians.
International Tuba Day was created for both tuba players and non-tuba players alike to learn more about the significance of the tuba in our musical society. For additional info, please check out the ITD website, http://www.tubaday.com/.

Man...I'll tell ya. Of course death is an everyday part of life, but the passing of folks whose music has touched your brain and heart is never easy. Let's see...my short list for 2023 includes Jeff Beck, Burt Bacharach, Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant), Wayne Shorter, Scott Johnson, Fuzzy Haskins (Parliament-Funkadelic), Yukihiro Takahashi (Yellow Magic Orchestra) and now his YMO cohort, the brilliant musician/composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. In Phase One, we'll hear a bunch of pieces from Sakamoto & YMO, while in Phase Two things will change up to bring you some new progressive rock in tandem with some other goodies.
In an attempt to try to balance things out, next week's program will feature the music of living composers whose birthdays are in April.

Greetings!
Welcome to another "short on time" show featuring longer pieces from a number of newer releases.
During my long weekend trip to visit friends and family in Connecticut, I had the opportunity to see Toby Amies' documentary, "In The Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50". Even if you're not a King Crimson or a progressive rock fan, the film is quite engaging, both funny and moving. Well worth checking out. In addition, on the way back I was able to make my seasonal winter stop at the Princeton Record Exchange and loaded up on goodies to be shared on upcoming programs.
