This week's program starts with some fine examples of contemporary composition from Viet Cuong, interpreted by saxophonist, Dylan Ward, the latest release from Aaron Jay Myers & experimental electronics from Anıl Çamcı.  Following a brief Gentle Giant interlude, the balance of the show consists of electronic/electro-acoustic artists, demonstrating the broad scope of sound made available for us to partake of.

Greetings!
Yes, I'm finally getting to catch up on posting current programs since I wasn't needed to work on Sunday as I had been originally scheduled. (I'm per diem speech pathologist, but I'm still not overly fond of 6 day work weeks.)  Nonetheless, today's program focuses primarily on a playlist suggested by an article, written by Paul Walker on the Medium.com website, entitled, "The Best Seven Prog Rock Albums of 2022 So Far".  (Unfortunately, you can't check out the article, since it has since been removed by the author.)  Having not heard any of the releases, I thought it would be interesting how my thoughts about the music lined up (or not) with Mr. Walker's.  Actually, they're quite close.

Today's festivities feature tracks of some length, since I will be away in Portugal and wanted to have a show ready, but put it together in a minimal amount of time while I get all my travel stuff together. I'm particularly happy to feature one of two extended tracks from Jack Curtis Dubowsky from his new release, "Bolsa Chica Calm", an homage to Bolsa Chica State Beach, one of his favorite surfing spots in Huntington Beach.  The piece references ambient, environmental, new age and experimental music, from vaporwave to Wendy Carlos’ "Sonic Seasonings."

I'm very happy to open the program with "Music Inspired By Two Poems Against War" by Stanley Grill who states, "I still harbor an inner faith that music possesses a power to reach into the hearts and minds of those who are listening and influence them for the better. With that thought in mind, much of my music was written to encourage thoughts about the possibility of peace."

5-7-22 Pushing The Envelope: Music Decidedly Left of Center / Celebrating International Tuba Day

Greetings!
A lot of synchronicity occurred in the construction of this particular show.  It started with the book pictured below which was rescued from a local thrift store. It consists, as the title indicates, of a collection of program notes for performances of compositions with the tuba as a solo classical instrument.  As I started going through it, I found that while there were some interesting pieces documented, the copyright date was 1994.  This, in turn, inspired a dive down another internet rabbit hold to find more current tuba based music.  In addition as I was digging, I found that May 6th, the day before the broadcast, was International Tuba Day.  Whoda thunk?
My resulting research turned up three doctoral dissertations which focused on various aspects of tuba repertoire, a solo tuba discography & a resource for composers concerning the capabilities of tuba, including the use of extended techniques.
