Welcome to the Halloween 2022 Edition of Pushing The Envelope, thanks to the reminder from my brother, Dan, an aficionado of all things Halloween. 
Since I sold 99% of my vinyl collection prior to moving to Maryland, I no longer have my stockpile of old spooky favorites and have perused currently available items to assemble today's program with particular new favorites being Jack Curtis Dubowski's new release, "Halloween Horror", the audience recording of John Geist's "The Music of Erich Zann" (featuring the Kronos Quartet w/ Peter Hamill) & particularly (after doing some research), the story behind "The Mummies of Cobbosseecontee" by Dreadnaught.

If you told me, a couple of weeks ago, that during the first set I'd segue from Gyorgy Ligeti to Robert Fripp based on a similar "riff", I'd have gone, "Huh?", but when I heard the opening notes from Ligeti's "Continuum", it immediately made me run for my copy of Fripp's "Exposure".  Check it out, you'll understand.

Today's festivities include a number musique-concrète pieces with sound sources gleaned from numerous intentional and unintentional sources, including one of my own pieces gleaned from the archives. 
The tail end of the show focuses on my acquisition of a new vocabulary work, "campanology", the scientific and musical study of bells. This resulted in my selection of pieces including hand bells, gamelan & carillon.

As I look at today's playlist, it reminds me of just how musically impressionable I am. All it takes is a minimal cue to check out new music, based on as little as a single sentence seen in a random post on my Twitter feed (i.e., the Jostaberry release) or on the other hand, how I'm perfectly happy to head down a rabbit hole based on researching the list of guest singers highlighted on the recent Badge Époque Ensemble release ("Clouds of Joy").  That was the inspiration for most of the first set.

THE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL STRANGE MUSIC DAY
International Strange Music Day was created by Patrick Grant, a New York City musician and composer. The aim of the celebration was to get people to play and listen to types of music that they had not before. Grant believed that something as simple as broadening our musical taste can also make us broadminded and more accepting of others. He follows the mantra ‘listening without prejudice.’ Grant also picked the day to promote his new album “Fields Amaze” in 1997, as a way to honor his girlfriend’s father (and his artistic mentor) on his birthday. By 2002, the day became an international phenomenon with various artists and venues. This growing movement is now attached to concerts, hosts a record label, and gains popular support from summer schools. The day is also appreciated as a great way to stimulate young minds.
